Saddam And The Cia.

George W.Bush isn't the first American president to have carried out "regime change" in iraq. In 1963 the CIA, under new President John F.Kennedy, was behind a successful coup in Baghdad, carried out in collaboration with a young Saddam Hussein.

The story was reported by Roger Morris, a former member of the US National Security Council, in the New York Times of March 14,2003. Forty years earlier, according to Morris, the CIA was involved in the overthrow of General Abd al-Karim Qasim ( aka Abdul Kassem ), who had deposed the pro-Western Iraqi monarchy in 1958. Initially, Qasim's repressive regime was tolerated by the Eisenhower administration because he was opposed to the West's Arab bugbear, Colonel Nasser of Eygpt. But in 1959, Qasim subdenly withdrew Iraq from the anti-Soviet Baghdad Pact, began to buy arms from the RUssians and gave government posts to Communists.

That same year, Saddam made a botched assasination attempt as part of what the IPI news agency, Following an interview with a former State Department Official, called a "US plot" to get rid of Qasim. Ludicrously, the CIA's euphermistically named "Health Alternation Committee" also sent Qasim a poisoned monogrammed handkercheif, though either he never recieved it or it failed to work.

According to former Ba'thist leader Hani Fkaiki, Saddam was working with the CIA again in 1962 and 1963, when a successful coup was finally staged Qasim was shot after a hasty trial. On the day the new regime took power, a National Security Council aide wrote to President Kennedy that it was "almost certainly a gain for our side". The Ba'th party then set about systematically arresting and killing large numbers of suspected Communists, using lists supplied by the CIA, Middle East expert Adel Darwish says that the killings were "presided over" by Saddam, who subsequently became head of the Ba'th party's intelligence service.

The new regime was armed by the US, and companies such as Bechtel, and oil companies British Petroleum and Mobil were soon doing business in Iraq. In 1968, however there was another coup-bloodless this time which brought the ba'thist general Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr to power. One of this relatives was Saddam Hussein, who became vice president and then president in 1979 after an ailing al-Bakr stood down - no doubt with more than a little encouragement from Saddam.

Was the CIA really "under" JFK? Our CIA conducted a regime change here in America when they killed Kennedy. But no one can refute that CIA put Saddam in power
